Bio - Nooshi Nayak

My loving relationship with hair started over thirty years ago when I was an art student in college. Whether it was looking through window of a barber shop or accompanying friends to fancy salons in San Francisco just for the chance to observe the stylists in action. I watched how hair could be manipulated and how a haircut would develop. As cutting hair became a joyous outlet of artistic creativity for me I decided to give up art school and follow my new passion. Over the following years I was blessed with great teachers and mentors.

After receiving my cosmetology license in 1982, I landed a job at Rich And Famous Salon in Cupertino, California. As a junior stylist I worked closely with Rita Elstrom, one of the most talented and professional hair stylists I have met to this day. I am for ever grateful of her for all that she taught me. One of what I learned from her is to take the time to listen to my clients and learn about their lifestyles, discuss their likes and dislikes about the texture of their hair and its growth pattern, as well as shape their head a face. Only then, I make suggestions and recommendations.

I spent 1986 and 1987 in New York City following the dream of doing editorial styling. Those were two of the most amazing years of my life. I did some of everything in the hair biz! I worked for a beauty supply as a salon consultant. As a freelance stylist I worked out of a suitcase at photo shoots in all sorts of locations, creating a portfolio and building a cliental. I also did the hair and make up for a featured film, The Suitors. But the highlight of my experiences in New York City may be the time that I assisted Oribe, an amazing hairstylist to the stars. This amazing experience showed me how much I love working behind the chair and forging relationship with people while I bring out the best of their hair.

From Talking Heads to Nooshi For Hair

Soon upon returning home to San Jose, California, I opened my first salon, Talking Heads, where I matured in to a seasoned hair stylist. In 2012 after many years, many ups and downs, many good life lessons and stories, I said good bye to Talking Heads in order to simply be Nooshi. Now, in my small studio, I am enjoying the time that I spend with my long time clients, and also look forward to welcoming and meeting new ones. Life is Good!

I still quote her when a client at the end of our session tells me, "This is exactly what I wanted!" and say, "The secret to a good hairstyle is a good consultation".
